This Christmas most of our mothers went to the market and specifically bought "layers". Do you know why? Here are some interesting and Enlightening facts about layers. 1) A high-production layer hen can produce approximately 250 to 300 eggs per year, averaging an egg every 24 to 26 hours. 2) Modern commercial white egg layers are primarily descended from the White Leghorn breed, which originated in Italy and is known for high efficiency. 3) The color of a hen’s egg is purely genetic; white-feathered hens with white earlobes typically lay white eggs, while red-feathered hens with red earlobes lay brown eggs. 4) Layer hens are incredibly efficient at converting feed into eggs, but their bodies prioritize egg production so much that their bones can become brittle from calcium depletion. 5) The domestic chicken is the only poultry species used globally for large-scale egg production. 6) A hen will rotate her egg up to 50 times a day during incubation to prevent the embryo from sticking to the shell and ensure proper development. 7) The egg industry uses specific breeds (like Rhode Island Reds or Plymouth Rocks) for brown eggs, as consumer preference often dictates the color, not the quality of the egg. 8) Egg-laying is heavily influenced by light exposure; commercial farms often manipulate the lighting schedule to encourage consistent year-round production, as hens naturally lay fewer eggs in the short days of winter. 9) A hen will typically lay her first egg when she is around 18 to 20 weeks old (about 4 to 5 months), depending on the breed and environment. 10) In a flock’s social structure (the pecking order), a dominant hen gets priority access to nesting boxes and food, leading to better egg production for the top birds. 11) The average commercial layer hen has a productive lifespan of about one to two years before her production significantly drops and she is retired from laying. 12) Layer chickens are known for their intelligence and can remember the faces of other chickens and people for years. 13) “Spent hens” (those whose egg production has declined) are typically used for processed meats because they are tougher and less meaty than the specialized broiler chickens bred for meat consumption. 14) The size of the egg generally increases as the hen gets older. 15) Some layer breeds have been selectively bred to lay colored eggs, such as blue or green, like the Ameraucana or Araucana breeds. What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. 1. Buying seedlings: Tissue culture banana seedlings have been proven to be of high quality and free of diseases. 2. Land condition and preparation: Your land must have the weather conditions that are suitable for bananas to grow well and thrive. Generally, from 800 meters above sea level and a minimum rainfall of 1000 mm per annum that is evenly distributed. Given that tissue culture bananas are high yielding, you better not try to rely on rainfall. Put a plan to have an irrigation system in place to avoid disappointments. 3. Planting: Tissue culture plantlets are planted in pits that are 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep. Well-drained soil is mixed with well-composed dry manure. Basal planting fertilizer is then added especially DAP and a dose of nematicide to keep nematodes away. The banana pit is then stuffed with this mixture, and then the plantlets are planted 30 cm deep within the pit. Soil firming should be done after placing the plantlet so that the roots can get into close contact with the soil. Planting holes should be spaced 3 meters apart, which translates to approximately 450 plantlets per acre. 4. Irrigation: Irrigation should be done twice a week. Drip irrigation is preferred to avoid a lot of movements on the farm which could lead to the spreading of diseases and pests. Dry mulch should be placed around the base of the plantlet to prevent water loss through evaporation. 5. Pest and disease management: Tissue culture bananas are normally free from viral and bacterial infections. During planting, anti-nematode powder is applied to keep the nematodes way. 6. EGG SHELL is a good source of Calcium, we eat powdered egg shells in farming communities - we even give our young ones & elderly. This is how we prepare it. - We only use Boiled Eggs (to £liminætē salmonella or any bacteria) - That membrane between the shell and the egg (that tiny white thing we remove from boiled egg, we don't throw it away oo, we add it to the shell, they're good too 🤩) - We then dry the shell a bit - We grîñd the $hé|| in pestle & motars, some uses grinding stones to make a fine powder (now some educated farmers use blenders) - We then sieve it out, keeping the powder alone. It's supplements for our young and elderly. When we have any bone Æçcident on the farm, we add it to the meals of the person Elderly that has bone or joint pain - we add it to their meal Young ones growing, we also add it to their meal During planting season when we need serious strength on the farm - we add it to our meal the night before.
